CAEL Test - Canadian Academic English Language Test

 

CAEL stands for Canadian Academic English Language test. It is a standardized test that assesses the English language proficiency of individuals who are applying to Canadian colleges and universities, or for professional certification. The test evaluates a test-taker's proficiency in four language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The test is administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises, a subsidiary of the University of British Columbia, and is recognized by over 180 Canadian colleges and universities. The CAEL is a computer-based test, and scores are valid for two years from the date of the test. CAEL is an online test so, it is not necessary to go to the test center. Candidates can take this exam from the comfort of their homes. 

The candidate gets the score separately in each test module as well as the overall score. CAEL evaluates the candidate’s performance on a scale of (10 - 90) where 10 is the least score, and 90 is the highest one.

Note: CAEL is accepted by 180+ universities in Canada.

 

The passages in the test are taken from the academic topics of first-year arts and science courses. It can be on below mentioned themes:

In the speaking module, candidates will get three questions in total and the time allotted for this section is 7-10 minutes.

 

Integrated Reading contains 1-2 short reading passages along with comprehension questions and 1-2 long reading passages along with comprehension questions. The total number of questions in this module is 14-25 and the allotted time is 35-50 minutes.

 

Integrated Listening consists of  1-2 short listening passages along with comprehension questions and 1-2 long listening passages along with comprehension questions. The total number of questions in this module is 14-25 and the allotted time is 25-35 minutes.

 

Academic Unit A has one long reading passage with questions, one long listening passage with questions, and one long writing question based on the information given in both passages. Candidates will have 60-70 minutes to attempt this section.

 

Academic Unit B has one long reading passage with questions, one long listening passage with questions, and one short writing question based on the information given in both passages. 40-45 minutes are given to complete this module.

 

The duration of a complete CAEL Test is 3.5 hours and its result will be out in 8 business days after the test date.

 

Crucial points to remember 

• The candidate needs to show the same ID on the test day with which he/she registered.
• Any Bluetooth device such as a wireless mouse, keyboard or microphone, etc is not allowed during the test.
