IELTS is a standardized test used to measure the English proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is designed to assess the language ability of individuals who wish to study or work in English-speaking countries. The test measures four key language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking, and is accepted by various organizations worldwide i.e. including employers, immigration authorities, universities, and professional bodies. The IDP Australia, British Council, and Cambridge Assessment English conduct IELTS.
It consists of four(4) sections, which assess the candidate's reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
There are two tasks in IELTS Writing. In the first task, candidates require to describe a chart, graph, or diagram, while the second task requires candidates to write an essay in response to a prompt. The total duration of this section is 60 minutes.
There are four recordings in the Listening test from native English speakers, and candidates have to listen and answer questions based on the recordings. The recordings are played only once, and candidates can write some notes on the sheet while listening. The total duration of this listening test is 30 minutes. You will have 10 minutes to transfer your answers on the answer sheet.
This section comprises three texts of increasing difficulty, and candidates have to answer 40 questions based on the texts. The texts are taken from books, newspapers, magazines, or academic journals. The Reading test is of 60 minutes.
This section is a face-to-face interview with an examiner and is designed to assess the candidate's ability to communicate in spoken English. The interview has three parts: a general introduction, a topic discussion, and a conclusion. The total duration of this section is approx. 11-14 minutes.
There are two types of IELTS modules:
IELTS Academic Module:
This module is designed for individuals who wish to continue their higher education in foreign countries (English-speaking countries). It assesses the candidate's ability to use English in an academic context, and the reading and writing tasks are more challenging than the General Training module.
IELTS General Training Module:
This module is for pupils who wish to migrate or work in an English-speaking environment. It assesses the candidate's ability to use English in day-to-day situations and workplace contexts, and the reading and writing tasks are related to general topics.
The listening and speaking sections are the same for both modules, and the scores obtained are valid for two years from the date of the test. Candidates should choose the module that best suits their purpose, depending on whether they plan to study or work in an English-speaking country.
